Feminism is not a taboo

“When a man gives his opinion, he's a man. When a woman gives her opinion, she's a bitch.”
― Bette Davis

Just around the corner of the restaurant while having my favorite black coffee with the book, I overheard friends discussing feminism, how it has ruined their way of living, I am not usually in the habit of eavesdropping but being a feminist myself I was quite intrigued in their conversation.

It has turned out that they were very frustrated by the outgoing issues and the word feminism. We all must have heard this word and we all must have got pissed at some point of time regarding the use and effect of the word. The world is in a constant process of evolution and we all are learning new methods to sustain ourselves. Over the last 100 years, the society has evolved around the thought that the lady needs someone to take care of her, someone has to be always by her side to support her, caress her and to tell her what she must do. She has been regarded as a property that can be treated at the mercy of the men.

Our society has definitely got something wrong during evolution, maybe some formula wrong or some magic that went awfully wrong. We all as homo sapiens have got a habit of forming an opinion on our own, we just assume, we make a short character sketch about a person without knowing the actual aspect of the person we might we talk with. I could not help but wonder if we were raised this way or are we just born with being so judgmental about everything.

Feminism has been defined by many smart people that it is a movement to make men feel downtrodden and distressed about their existence. Feminism is the most misunderstood notion in the world today. But we all have failed to realize that women have always been the object to be used by the society and to be twisted by the way they want. The moment is called so because we fight for the rights of the women who were never given to them. We fight for equality, for the justice that is needed for us. We don’t fight this to put down men; we fight this to get the equal status as men.

This movement has been started in the West and from there it is enlarging its wings. More than rights it talks about the availability of the medium. While having a conversation with my friends he said why we are fighting for equality? we should fight for equity,! Today is the day I would answer you, my friend.

When we talk about equality and equity, we miss the major difference in this which is equality is treating both the sexes equally and equity giving both the sexes equally opportunities to reach their goals. This is the real issue we are dealing with here, the EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES for both. Men have always got their hands cleared, whatever they want, they take it howsoever they want, but with women, it’s always the fights, there is always a struggle.

The process to remove this struggle is what is called feminism. Let’s take a very surreal example of gender bias when a man cheats on his wife with another woman, the OTHER woman is looked down upon, and why is that? Because our society frames an opinion that the women must have lured him into this, but no, she did not; the man has gone there first. The status quo is a powerful force. Change is difficult and slow.

Feminism has never been the movement against men or anyone, it is the movement which defines that fact that every woman has the right to live her life the way she wants it, on her terms.

Indian society has set boundaries for the women but never for the men, but we say let it go.

Let her get married after becoming financially independent

Let her decide the age at which she wants to get married.

Let her marry whomsoever she feels comfortable with.

Let her choose to have or not to have the child.

Let her chose to abort or not to abort the baby.

IT IS HER BODY, HER MIND, AND HER SOUL.

LET HER LIVE.

BE THE CHANGE TO SEE THE CHANGE.

Well written Shreya. I strongly support your views, feminism is a philosophy which emphasizes a belief in an integral complementarity of men and women, rather than the superiority of men over women or women over men. But i personnaly find women is more hard, more brave, more adjustable and more and more. That's why she is gives birth to man.
